This piece came from a place of deep frustration. A creative person isn’t able to be creative all the time. Inspiration must strike. But when it doesn’t strike, and it doesn’t again … and again … and again … and again … for a long time and never seems to end … it gets maddening! I’ve been alive long enough to know that it WILL come back. The problem is, how long do I have to wait? Sometimes a creative black hole lasts a few days and has lasted as long as a few years. That is the crux of the problem. I need to make art. It’s what gives me fulfilment and makes me feel like I’m working on my life’s calling. When I can’t make art, I feel like there is nothing for me. It can lead me down to a very dark place. It’s a place I call ‘smoke and bones’. Everything (and I mean everything!) feels so dry, and the air is hard to breath when I’m down here. It’s a grueling climb out. This is the first piece I have been able to do in this slump I am currently in. This one took me weeks to complete. The smoke and bones won’t get out of the way to let me see clearly forward. In honor of this season of my creative life, I give you Smoke and Bones.
